Manage license assignments

Learn how to manage your license assignments in SAM on Snow Atlas.

The licenses can be assigned to specific organization nodes, sites, computers/datacenters, or users depending on the assignment type. For more information, see Assignment types.

Assign licenses to organization nodes

You can assign licenses to organization nodes if the assignment type of the licenses is Organization. Available organization nodes are the sub-nodes of the organization node that you selected as the legal organization node for the license purchase.

note

When Auto allocate is enabled, the Add assignment option is not available.

  1. Add a new or edit an existing license with the assignment type Organization. For more information, see Add licenses and Edit licenses.

  2. On the Assignment tab, select Add assignment.

  3. Select the arrow to the left to show the organization structure, and then select the organization node.

  4. Select Apply.
The organization node you selected is now listed on the Assignment tab.

  5. In Quantity, enter the number of licenses you want to assign to the organization node.

  6. To assign licenses to more organization nodes, repeat steps 2 through 5.

Assign licenses to sites

You can assign a license to a site if the assignment type of the license is Site.

  1. Add a new or edit an existing license with the assignment type Site. For more information, see Add licenses and Edit licenses.

  2. On the Assignment tab, select the site you want to assign the license to.

Assign licenses to computers or datacenters

You can assign licenses to computers or datacenters if the assignment type of the licenses is Computer/datacenter.

For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

  1. Add a new or edit an existing license with the assignment type Computer/datacenter. For more information, see Add licenses and Edit licenses.

  2. On the Assignment tab, select Add assignment.

  3. In Add computer datacenter assignment, do the following:

    1. Search for the computers or datacenters by starting to type, for example, a Name, an Organization, or a Type. The search results appear as you enter text.

      note

The starting point for the search function is to find all machines with the application installed and to which the license can be assigned, based on the use rights selected for the license. The use rights that are taken into account are downgrade rights, upgrade rights, cross platform rights, and cross edition rights. To refine the search result, add filter options to the search.

    2. Optional: In Types, use the check boxes to select what types of computers or datacenters you want to search for: Physical, Virtual, Datacenter/Cluster, or Select all to see them all. See examples, later in this section.

    3. Optional: In More options, use the check boxes to create filters for what you want to search for: Show only machines hosting VMs with application installed, Show only machines hosting VMs with application family installed, Show only machines requiring a license, and Ignore use rights. See examples, later in this section.

    4. In the search result list, select the computers or datacenters that you want to assign licenses to, and then select Add.
The computers or datacenters you selected are now listed on the Assignment tab.

  4. On the Assignment tab and for each selected computer or datacenter, enter the Quantity of assigned licenses.

The number of Total licenses, Total assigned, and Total remaining is changed according to the entered Quantity of assigned licenses.

  5. For licenses with VM use rights, select the option that meets the license purchase conditions: No, Any, or Unlimited.

  6. For licenses with VM use rights set to Any, in Virtual instances, select the number of virtual instances that can be covered.

  7. For licenses with VM use rights set to Any or Unlimited, you can override the setting and assign VM use rights to specific virtual instances. Do the following:

    1. Select the VM use rights cell of the host computer.

    2. Optional: Filter the list of virtual instances.

    3. Select the virtual instances to be assigned with a license.

    4. Select Select.
The VM use rights column now shows Specific (X) where X is the number of the virtual instances you selected in the previous step.

See the following examples of how to use Types and More options when searching for computers or datacenters.
