Manage licenses

Learn how to manage your licenses in SAM on Snow Atlas.

View licenses

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find the license that you want to view the details for. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. Select View details to view the details of that specific license. For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

Search for licenses

You can search for licenses by using filtering and sorting.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. In the table header, select the funnel of the column that you want to use for your search, and then do the following:

    • To filter by text:

      1. Select operator: Contains, Does not contain, Equals to, Not equals to, Starts with, Ends with, Is empty, or Is not empty.
        The default operator is Contains.

      2. In Filter..., enter the search criterion.

    • To filter by dates:

      1. In the calendar view, select a time period by selecting From and To dates.

      2. Select Apply.

    • To filter by numbers:

      1. Select operator: Equals to, Not equals to, Greater than, Greater than or equals to, Less than, Less than or equals to, In range, Is empty, or Is not empty.
        The default operator is Equals to.

      2. In Filter..., enter the search criterion.
        Note the following:

        • For operator In range, select from and to values.
        • For operators Is empty and Is not empty, the Filter... option is not available.
    • To filter by predefined values:

      1. Select the checkboxes for the values that you want to include in your search. By default, all checkboxes are selected.
  3. Optional: To change the columns of the table, do the following:

    • To add more columns, select Columns, and then use the checkboxes to select the columns that you want to add.
    • To remove single columns, select Columns, and then use the checkboxes to deselect the columns that you want to remove.
    • To remove all columns you have added and revert to the default set of columns, point to the right of any column name, select the three dots that appear, and then select Reset columns.
  4. Optional: In the table header, select any column name to sort by that column. Select the column name once again to reverse the sort order.

  5. Optional: To adjust the width of one or all columns, point to the right of the column name, select the three dots that appear, and then select to Autosize this column or to Autosize all columns.

  6. To remove all filters, select Reset all filters.

Add licenses

To make the registration of a license purchase complete, you must enter certain information, such as the name of the application, the number of licenses, and the license metric. There may also be a license policy defined by the system administrator, making more fields mandatory.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Select Add license.

  3. Add the applicable information. For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

  4. Select Add.

Automatic allocation is enabled when you register a license. For more information, see License allocation.

Edit licenses

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find the license that you want to edit. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. Select View details.

  4. On the Actions menu, select Edit.

  5. Edit the applicable information. For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

  6. Select Save.

Copy licenses

You can add a new license purchase based on another license in SAM on Snow Atlas. This can be useful when you add multiple licenses with similar settings and information, or if a similar license already exists.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find the license that you want to copy. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. Select View details.

  4. On the Actions menu, select Copy.

  5. Edit the applicable information. For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

  6. Select Add.

Upgrade licenses

You can upgrade a license within a single license purchase or simultaneously within multiple licenses. However, selected licenses must belong to the same application family. Note that you can only upgrade existing licenses.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find the license that you want to upgrade. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. Select View details.

  4. On the Actions menu, select Upgrade.

  5. On the edit page of the license, do the following:

    1. On the Purchase tab, in Application details, search for and select the Application name to upgrade to.

    2. On the Base licenses tab, do the following:

      1. In Base licenses to upgrade for the application, type the number of base licenses that you want to use for the upgrade.
      2. In Upgrade quantity, type the quantity to upgrade to.
  6. Add the rest of the applicable information. For field descriptions, see Licenses: Reference.

  7. Select Add.

EXAMPLE

You can change the license metric when upgrading licenses.

A license for Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard has Installations as default metric. If that license is upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, the upgrade license can have Number of processors as metric, which is the Microsoft default metric for this Windows Server version. Subsequently, the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard license can be upgraded to a Windows Server 2016 Standard license, then using Number of processor cores as metric.

Delete licenses

  • You cannot restore a deleted license.

  • When you delete a license that serves as a base license for a license upgrade, the upgraded license becomes incomplete. An incomplete license is not included in compliance calculations.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find and select the license that you want to delete. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. On the Actions menu, select Delete.

  4. Select Delete to confirm.

Archive licenses

caution

When you archive a license that serves as a base license for a license upgrade, the upgraded license becomes incomplete. An incomplete license is not included in compliance calculations.

Archived licenses keep any connections to agreements.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find and select the license or licenses that you want to archive. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  3. On the Actions menu, select Archive.

  4. In Archive licenses, review the details of the selected licenses. If you change your mind about archiving one or more licenses, use the check boxes to deselect them.

  5. Select Archive.

Unarchive licenses

Archived licenses keep any connections to agreements.

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. In the Status column, select to show only Archived licenses.

  3. Find and select the license or licenses that you want to unarchive. For information on how to search, see Search for licenses.

  4. On the Actions menu, select Unarchive.

  5. In Unarchive licenses, review the details of the selected licenses. If you change your mind about bringing one or more licenses back from the archive, use the check boxes to deselect them.

  6. Select Unarchive.
