Example: Use a custom metric and a custom field for organization nodes for compliance calculations

The license requirement for Client Access Licenses (CALs) for Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 cannot be discovered by the Snow Inventory Agents. Instead, you choose to define the number of required licenses by assigning custom fields to organization nodes.

This is an overview of the steps to follow.

  1. Create a custom field called Exchange CAL requirement.

    note

The custom field must have the following properties:

    • Category: Organization nodes

    • Type: Number

For more information, see Add custom fields.

  2. Create a custom metric called Exchange CAL. Select the custom field Exchange CAL requirement as the basis for compliance calculations. For more information, see Add custom metrics.

  3. Define the number of required licenses for each organization node that uses the application Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard User CAL, by assigning the custom field Exchange CAL requirement and the quantity to the organization nodes. For more information, see Manage custom information and Edit nodes manually and manage custom information.

  4. On the license for Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard User CAL, enter the number of licenses purchased in Quantity, and select Custom metric as the Metric. For more information, see Add licenses.

  5. Recalculate the compliance.

Example: Use a custom metric and a custom field for devices for compliance calculations

The license requirement for Client Access Licenses (CALs) for Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 cannot be discovered by the Snow Inventory Agents. Instead, you choose to define the number of required licenses by using a custom field on the devices, that is, on the computers and mobile devices.

This is an overview of the steps to follow.

  1. Create a custom field called Exchange CAL requirement.

    note

The custom field must have the following properties:

    • Category: Devices

    • Type: Number

For more information, see Add custom fields.

  2. Create a custom metric called Exchange CAL. Select the custom field Exchange CAL requirement as the basis for compliance calculations. For more information, see Add custom metrics.

  3. On the application Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard User CAL, add the metric Custom metric, and then select Exchange CAL. For more information, see Edit applications.

  4. Define the number of required licenses for all devices that have the application Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard User CAL installed, by assigning the custom field Exchange CAL requirement and the quantity to the devices. Do this manually or update the relevant computers and mobile devices via the data import functionality. For more information, see Manage imports of computer data.

  5. On the license for Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Standard User CAL, enter the number of licenses purchased in Quantity, and select Custom metric as the Metric. For more information, see Add licenses.

  6. Recalculate the compliance.
